South Bend, Indiana
was home to Alexis Coquillard in 1823. He established a fur trading post in the
area. Merchants and innkeepers were also drawn to South Bend.
During the 1800s,
companies like Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company sparked the industrial
growth of South Bend. After 1890, the railroad system had connected South Bend
with all other cities.
In 1903, the Oliver
Chilled Plow Company situated within South Bend, Indiana. The first steam
locomotive came to South Bend during 1851. Electrified streetcars appeared in
1882.
Other manufacturing
companies soon joined the ranks of Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company,
specifically Birdsell Manufacturing Company, the Bendix Corporation, Honeywell
and Singer Machine Company.
Later, South Bend
Toy Company established its business in South Bend.
Today, South Bend
is proud of its Summer in the City Festival and the Firefly Festival for the
Performing Arts.
