Dr. Todd Graham was in the middle of his day at the orthopedic clinic in South Bend when a new patient came into his office complaining of chronic pain. In the first few days after the murder, he received calls from doctors concerned for the safety of their patients and their staff and patients. He kept up calls and emails from patients, family members and friends of the victims.
He also wanted to redouble his efforts to get his colleagues to use the state's prescription drug monitoring program, INSPECT, which allows doctors to look up a patient's history of opioid prescriptions. For its part, the medical profession said it wanted to focus on educating its colleagues about the right way to prescribe opioids. There were many doctors in the area, including Graham's colleagues, asking each other if they would continue to prescribe opioids, but no one did.
