South Bend Indiana Jobs

Decades of suburban development and white flight have led some to believe that well-paying jobs have left South Bend. The story that is told, and I think is that it used to be a poor city, but not so much.

We can look at median income and it clearly shows that households are less prosperous than in most other areas. Some are particularly poor, but households in South Bend with incomes of less than $50,000 a year are wealthier than the average household in other parts of the city.

As a result, average weekly earnings in Elkhart and Goshen rose 3.7 percent to $876 and in South Bend by 2.5 percent, or about $1,000. The median income for households with incomes below $50,500 a year is $23.87, compared with $24.29, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Since 2010, when the economic recovery began, South Bend and Mishawaka have overtaken their neighboring regions in labor force growth rates. Both Elkhart and Goshen fell below the national and state values of that measure, but the US and Indiana have overtaken their neighboring states.

Meanwhile, neighboring South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart, and Goshen are also above the national average in labor force growth rates. While the combined regions' labour force will continue to grow until 2019, their share will not increase until 2018, suggesting slow growth in these regions.

Still, the unemployment rates in Elkhart and Goshen are still below the national average of 4.1 percent and 3.5 percent, respectively. In Mishawaka, the unemployment rate has risen from 4-0.4 percent in 2015 to 3-2.3 percent this year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Although the labour market is still tight, we are seeing wages continue to rise until 2020, which is supporting household consumption. The largest increase in employment was in natural resources and mining / construction in the South Bend / Mishal MSA region, followed by manufacturing (1843 more workers), education (2743) and retail / warehousing (3,000).
